Mineral cargo covers a much wider range than many shippers assume: kaolin clay, alumina powder, silica sand, quartz, cement, lime powder, gypsum, talc, soda ash, titanium dioxide and other industrial minerals. Each behaves differently inside a shipping container. Particle size, moisture sensitivity, density and abrasiveness determine whether a standard woven liner is enough — or whether the cargo requires a sift-proof sealed liner, a heat-welded rail liner, or a full PE film moisture barrier.
The two questions that decide most liner specifications are: how fine is the material, and how sensitive is it to moisture. Fine powders below roughly 100 mesh leak through ordinary sewn seams and create dust inside the container. Hygroscopic minerals such as kaolin, soda ash, cement and lime absorb moisture from container sweat and condensation, leading to caking, hardening, clumping, mold growth or weight changes. The right container liner converts a standard 20ft, 40ft or 40HQ box into a protected bulk transport unit.
Why the Wrong Liner Creates Problems for Mineral Cargo
Moisture damage is the leading cause of mineral cargo failures on long sea routes. When a container moves through different climates, temperature fluctuations cause water vapor to condense on the walls and roof. Without a liner, that moisture migrates into the cargo. Kaolin clay cakes and hardens. Cement and lime start to set. Soda ash clumps and loses free-flowing properties. The result is rejected shipments, demurrage costs, and insurance claims.
Dust leakage is the second problem. Mineral powders such as alumina, talc, gypsum and pigment-grade titanium dioxide escape through stitched seams, zippers and door gaps. This creates loss, cross-contamination of the container, and port or workplace dust hazards. Sift-proof construction is not a marketing detail — it is the difference between a sealed shipment and a leaking one.
Contamination is the third risk. A container that previously carried chemicals, fertilizer or non-food commodities can contaminate a high-purity mineral cargo. Dedicated liners with clean internal surfaces prevent contact with residues and make container turnaround faster.
Finally, bagged loading is slow and expensive. Bulk loading through a container liner filling spout can reduce loading time from several hours of manual bagging to under an hour, while also reducing labor, packaging waste and manual contact.
Matching Container Liners to Mineral Cargo Types
The correct liner starts with the cargo profile, not the container size alone. The table below matches common mineral products to practical liner constructions.
| Mineral Cargo | Primary Risk | Recommended Liner Construction | Typical Specification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaolin clay powder | Moisture absorption, caking, fine dust | Sift-proof coated woven liner or PE film liner | PU tape sealed seams, moisture resistance ≥98% |
| Alumina powder — rail wagon | Fine dust, high fill weight, leakage | Heat-welded wagon liner | 150–200 gsm woven PE, seamless, tensile ≥2,000 N/5cm |
| Cement / lime powder | Moisture hardening, dust emission | Sift-proof coated woven liner | Double-sided PE coating, 20–40 t load capacity |
| Silica sand / quartz | Abrasion, high density | Heavy-duty standard woven dry bulk liner | 140 gsm HDPE woven, warp tensile ≥1,800 N/5cm |
| Soda ash | Hygroscopic clumping, contamination | Laminated woven or PE film liner | Continuous moisture barrier, smooth surface |
| Titanium dioxide / pigments | Discoloration, contamination | cURL Too many subrequests by single Worker invocation. What is the difference between DBL-W01 and DBL-W06 for mineral cargo?
The DBL-W01 is a general-purpose woven dry bulk liner for granules and moderately coarse materials. The DBL-W06 adds double-sided PE coating and PU tape sealed seams, making it suitable for fine powders that require sift-proof and moisture-resistant performance.
Is there a liner for alumina powder moved by rail?
Yes. The DBL-04W Wagon Liner is heat-welded and engineered for rail wagons, with high tensile strength and leak-proof operation under static pressure. For ISO container transport of alumina, a sift-proof ISO liner is the practical equivalent.
Are dry bulk container liners reusable for minerals?
Some thermal liners are reusable multiple times, but dry bulk liners used for mineral cargo are usually single-use because of contamination risk and seam wear. Reuse should only be considered for the same cargo with manufacturer approval.
