Moisture is the most expensive problem in salt bulk shipping. Because salt is hygroscopic, it absorbs water vapor from air, condenses on container walls and floors, and arrives as caked lumps instead of free-flowing cargo. The solution is not one action but a controlled combination: a moisture-proof container liner plus a deliberate moisture management plan. Why Moisture Control Is Non-Negotiable for Salt

Sodium chloride has a critical relative humidity threshold around 75% at typical ambient temperatures. Above that level, salt begins absorbing moisture from the air. In a shipping container, the problem accelerates because temperature swings create condensation cycles.

During a long sea voyage, the container passes through multiple climate zones. When warm, humid air cools against steel walls and floors, moisture condenses as droplets. This is the classic container rain effect: water drips from the roof and runs down walls directly onto cargo.

For bulk salt, the consequences are not theoretical:

Free-flowing salt becomes caked and difficult to unload.
Moisture gain increases cargo weight, which can trigger quantity disputes between seller and buyer.
Salt brine forms and corrodes the container floor, increasing wash and repair costs.
Food-grade salt with moisture damage may fail purchase specifications or import inspection.
Wet salt clings to the liner and discharge equipment, slowing turnaround time.

The goal is to keep salt isolated from the container environment and to remove residual moisture from the enclosed air.

Not all liners perform equally for salt. Salt needs a full moisture barrier and a smooth interior surface. The right liner depends on salt type, particle size, and whether the end use is food or industrial.

Why PE Film Liners Are the Standard for Salt

PE film liners are the most common choice for bulk salt because LDPE creates a continuous, non-porous barrier. The 140-micron grade used for salt shipments blocks moisture and dust completely, and the smooth surface prevents salt from adhering during discharge.

Salt has a high bulk density, typically 1.15 to 1.30 tons per cubic meter. This means a 20-foot container often reaches its legal weight limit before it is physically full. The liner must therefore withstand concentrated load pressure on the floor without splitting. A PE film liner with tensile strength above 1,500 N/5cm handles this well.

Food-grade LDPE options also provide regulatory confidence. For salt intended for human consumption, the liner must not leach contaminants, odor, or plasticizers into the cargo. Third-party certifications such as FDA, LFGB, REACH, and RoHS become essential.
