Two of the most common materials used in their construction are woven polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) film. Understanding the core differences between these two material systems is essential for protecting your cargo and optimizing logistics costs.

A woven PP container liner is typically made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene woven fabric, often coated with a lamination layer to enhance moisture resistance. The base material is a tightly woven textile that provides high tensile strength and tear resistance. It can be designed with lifting loops, loading spouts, and discharge outlets. Our DBL-W01 and malt-grade DBL-W02 liners are representative examples of this category.

A PE-Folien-Containerliner, on the other hand, is manufactured from blown or cast polyethylene film—most commonly LDPE (low-density polyethylene). It forms a continuous, seamless barrier with no woven texture. The smooth surface eliminates cargo hang-up, and the film can be made thicker for increased durability. Our DBL-F01 standard PE film liner and the European pellet-focused DBL-F02 are built on this principle.

Both types serve the same fundamental purpose—protecting dry bulk cargo from moisture, contamination, and spillage during transit—but they do so with very different physical properties and application sweet spots.

Material Structure and Manufacturing

Woven liners start as extruded tapes that are woven into a fabric, then often coated on one or both sides with a thin layer of PE or PP. This laminated structure combines the tensile resistance of woven fabric with the barrier properties of the coating. Seams are typically stitched and then sealed with heat-sealing tape or over-taping. For powder-grade applications like cement or titanium dioxide, a sift-proof variant with PU tape-sealed seams is used. The woven base gives these liners a distinctive textured feel and high resistance to punctures from sharp-edged cargo.

PE film liners are produced by blowing or casting molten polyethylene into a continuous tube or sheet. The absence of seams on the liner body (side walls and floor are often cut from a single film tube) means there are no stitch holes to seal. Welded seams used for spouts and closures maintain a uniform barrier integrity. The material is inherently flexible and conforms closely to the container walls, which helps during discharge by reducing “bridging.” PE liners can range from 80 to over 200 microns in thickness.

Physical Performance Comparison

Property

Gewebter PP/HDPE-Liner

PE-Folien-Liner

Tensile strength (warp)

1,500–2,000+ N/5cm

1,300–1,500 N/5cm

Durchstoßfestigkeit

High – woven structure distributes point loads

Moderate – can be punctured by sharp objects

Feuchtigkeitsbarriere

98%+ with lamination; breathable uncoated versions available

100% waterproof barrier

Dust/sift resistance

Seam-dependent; PU-taped seams achieve 100% sift-proof

Seamless – inherently dust-tight

Cargo adhesion

Possible on uncoated fabric

Smooth surface reduces adhesion

Flexibility at low temperatures

Remains strong, but uncoated fabric may stiffen

Excellent – PE stays flexible well below 0°C

Weight per liner

15–50 kg depending on size and coating

15–40 kg

Wiederverwendbarkeit

Typically single-use; heavy-duty variants reusable 2–3 times

Typically single-use

Cost per unit

Generally lower for standard grades

Slightly higher for equivalent thickness, but cheaper than complex coated woven

How to Choose Between Woven and PE Film Liners

Cargo Type Matters Most

The first and most critical filter is your cargo. Woven liners excel with granular, semi-abrasive, or irregularly shaped materials that could puncture a thin film. Think grains, minerals, cement, soda ash, and plastic pellets. The woven base provides forgiveness if cargo is loaded quickly from height. For malt and other premium grains, double-sided LDPE lamination on woven fabric offers a food-grade moisture barrier while still handling well under high-speed auger loading. Our DBL-W02 malt-grade liner is engineered specifically for this scenario, cutting loading time from hours to 30–60 minutes compared to bagging.

cURL Too many subrequests by single Worker invocation.
