What Are Woven PP and PE Film Container Liners?

Dry bulk container liners allow shippers to turn standard 20ft and 40ft ISO containers into bulk transport units. Two of the most common materials used in their construction are woven polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) film. Understanding the core differences between these two material systems is essential for protecting your cargo and optimizing logistics costs.

A woven PP container liner is typically made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polypropylene woven fabric, often coated with a lamination layer to enhance moisture resistance. The base material is a tightly woven textile that provides high tensile strength and tear resistance. It can be designed with lifting loops, loading spouts, and discharge outlets. The absence of seams on the liner body (side walls and floor are often cut from a single film tube) means there are no stitch holes to seal. The material is inherently flexible and conforms closely to the container walls, which helps during discharge by reducing “bridging.” PE liners can range from 80 to over 200 microns in thickness.

How to Choose Between Woven and PE Film Liners

The first and most critical filter is your cargo. Woven liners excel with granular, semi-abrasive, or irregularly shaped materials that could puncture a thin film. Think grains, minerals, cement, soda ash, and plastic pellets. The woven base provides forgiveness if cargo is loaded quickly from height. For malt and other premium grains, double-sided LDPE lamination on woven fabric offers a food-grade moisture barrier while still handling well under high-speed auger loading. While laminated woven liners offer very high moisture resistance, the inherent stitched seams (even when taped) are potential weak points under prolonged high-humidity conditions. PE film liners, with their unified construction, provide a continuous membrane that beats any sewn assembly for moisture ingression resistance. For container shipments passing through tropical regions or enduring multiple handling stages, the PE film liner offers extra peace of mind.

Conversely, some agricultural cargoes like soybeans and coffee beans benefit from a degree of breathability to prevent condensation and mold. Uncoated woven PP liners allow limited air exchange while still containing the product, reducing the risk of sweat accumulation on the cargo surface.

Loading and Discharge Methods

Woven liners handle aggressive top-loading from chutes, augers, and conveyors without tearing. They are forgiving during installation because they can be pulled and adjusted with moderate force. PE film liners require more careful handling to avoid punctures from the container floor or wall imperfections. Proper container preparation (removing nails, smoothing surfaces) is critical. During discharge, PE film liners often flow out more completely because the film collapses smoothly as cargo is pulled out by gravity or pneumatic systems. Woven liners may trap small amounts of product in the fabric texture, though this is rarely a concern for industrial-grade materials.

Cost vs. Total Value

On a per-unit basis, standard woven liners are generally the most economical option for high-volume dry bulk shipping. However, the total cost of use must account for cleaning, cargo loss, and potential damage claims. If a woven liner leaves some product behind or fails at a seam, the hidden costs can exceed the savings. PE film liners slightly higher price often pays back through reduced waste, faster discharge, and fewer moisture damage incidents. When shipping premium products like food-grade malt or organic commodities, the assurance of a film liner’s barrier and cleanliness often justifies the incremental cost.

Industry-Specific Recommendations

Agriculture & grains (corn, soybeans, wheat, rice): Woven PP with optional coating; barless designs for small seeds. Uncoated woven for breathable transport of coffee beans and cocoa.

Food ingredients (flour, sugar, milk powder, starch): PE film liner is the standard. Smooth surface, easy clean-out, no fiber contamination risk. Look for FDA-compliant film options.

Chemicals and industrial powders (cement, fly ash, titanium dioxide, PVC resin): Woven sift-proof with PU-sealed seams or PE film, depending on particle size and dust risk. For very fine powders, PE film can be more reliable.

Plastic pellets and resins (PP, PE, ABS, PC): Both woven and PE film work. Woven is often chosen for higher loading speed, while PE film is preferred for contamination-free delivery and complete discharge.

Minerals and construction materials (sand, gypsum, kaolin): Abrasive nature favors tougher woven liners with high warp/weft strength.

Misconceptions and Practical Trade-Offs

A common misunderstanding is that thicker always means better. Beyond a certain point, increasing woven fabric weight merely adds cost and handling difficulty without proportional benefit. For PE film, a 140-micron LDPE film is typically sufficient for 20–30 ton loads of granular cargo; going to 200 microns may be unnecessary unless the cargo is particularly dense or has sharp edges.

Temperature conditions also affect material choice. In sub-zero environments, standard woven fabric can become stiffer, making installation harder. PE film retains its flexibility much better in cold chain and winter shipping scenarios, reducing the risk of cracking during liner setup.

Finally, consider your loading partner’s expertise. If your team is experienced with container liner installation, woven liners are straightforward. If you are setting up a new shipping lane with less-experienced labor, PE film liners may be easier to secure and less prone to installation damage because they are lighter and conform readily.
