Fresh Produce Shipping with Thermal Pallet Covers

A case involving sweet potatoes, chard and cucumbers in US produce distribution. Review the shipping challenge, the packaging approach and the project-specific outcomes.

The Shipping Challenge

The supplier described in this case shipped more than 15,000 produce pallets annually. Different cargoes required different temperature conditions: 3–8°C for leafy greens and 13–18°C for sweet potatoes.

The project addressed temperature changes, condensation, mixed-commodity loading and handling during distribution.

  • Review the conditions needed by each commodity.
  • Consider storage, truck loading and last-mile transfer together.
  • Match pallet coverage and closures to the handling process.

The Packaging Approach

The case describes customized thermal pallet covers, evaluated through laboratory testing and route trials before rollout.

Match the Cargo

The design considered the different requirements of sweet potatoes and leafy greens, rather than applying one temperature target to every commodity.

Review Pallet Coverage

Composite cover construction, full-pallet fit and closures were reviewed around the handling and mixed-commodity loading arrangement.

Evaluate the Route

The project considered insulation alongside the existing cold-chain operation. Actual requirements depend on the cargo, exposure and transit conditions.

Reported Project Results

The published case reports the following results over nine months. These figures describe that project; they are not a performance guarantee for other shipments.

MeasureReported Project Result
Product spoilage12–15% before → 1.2% after
Truckload utilization35% increase
Transportation costs22% reduction
Fuel use18% reduction
Customer rejection rate8% before → 0.5% after

The spoilage and rejection figures are shown as reported before-and-after rates. No additional reduction percentage is inferred from them.
